POP EYE

February 12, 1995|Dave Jennings, from London

ENGLAND SWINGS: Has Sinead O'Connor--who once tore up a photo of the Pope on "Saturday Night Live"--reconciled with the Catholic Church? Well, no, but in a recent interview with the Irish Times, she credited an elderly priest with helping her break an addiction to marijuana and come to terms with the abuse she claims to have suffered as a child at the hands of her mother.

"I put myself into a treatment center last August when I wanted to come off (marijuana)," she said in the interview. "There was a very old priest there who really restored my faith in the Church."

Don't look for her at Sunday Mass, though. In the interview she was still very critical of the Church, claiming that it fosters bad values among young people.
