Karchers to Open 20 Bagel Stores in Orange County: Orange County's Karcher family, best known for its chain of Carl's Jr. hamburger restaurants, is venturing into another area of the food industry: bagels. Mike Karcher and his parents, Bernard and Joan, have signed a deal to open 20 Chesapeake Bagel Bakery stores in Orange County and the Inland Empire. Bernard Karcher is a Carl's Jr. franchisee and brother of chain founder Carl N. Karcher. Chesapeake Bagel, a chain based in McLean, Va., has 52 stores nationwide and plans to have 180 locations by year's end, including its first in California. Terms of the company's agreement with the Karchers were not disclosed.
