HUNTINGTON PARK : New Chief to Be Announced Monday

March 05, 1995|ENRIQUE LAVIN

The new Huntington Park chief of police will be announced at Monday's City Council meeting.

The name is being withheld until the candidate signs the contract, which will take place in a closed council session prior to the regular meeting, Mayor Ric Loya said.

"We anticipate he would assume duties as chief April 1," Loya said. "He'd probably start working with the retiring chief (Bill Reed) within the next few weeks."

From a pool of 45 candidates who applied from throughout the state, eight finalists surfaced to replace Chief Frank Sullivan, who stepped down last May amid allegations of sexual harassment, favoritism and discrimination against himself and others within the department.

The city hired Reed, who is a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department captain, last year to investigate misconduct within the department.

He has fired two officers for overtime fraud and falsifying police reports, among other misconduct.

The new chief is expected to complete remaining inquiries within the 65-member department, Reed said.
