COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Kotsay Leads Titan Attack on Texas

After getting only two hits Friday afternoon, the Cal State Fullerton baseball team pounded out 15 on Saturday, defeating host Texas, 17-3.

Mark Kotsay had four hits, including two inside-the-park home runs, and four runs batted in for the Titans, who hit five homers in the game.

Starting pitcher Tim Dixon (4-0) gave up six hits, two earned runs and struck out five in the complete game.

In other nonconference baseball:

Chapman 5, The Masters College 3--Matt McCready hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Brad Martin hit his fifth home run of the season in the sixth for Chapman (4-10).

Long Beach State 9, Fresno State 4--Kirk Pierce's three-run homer in the seventh inning capped a five-run seventh for the 49ers (9-8). Kyle Wilson (4-0) threw the final 4 2/3 innings.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 12-2, Westmont 4-6--Josh Sewell had two homers for SCC (6-12, 2-3), which split a doubleheader with Westmont.

In the Cal State Fullerton softball tournament:

Cal State Fullerton 9, San Diego State 3--Teresa Stippey had two doubles and three RBIs for the Titans (10-4).

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 8-14, Pacific Christian 0-0--Jennifer Merrow threw a complete game with two strikeouts in the second game.

At the Penn/Arizona State Invitational men's tennis:

UC Irvine 4, Southern Methodist 3--Chris Tontz defeated Kevin Epley at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, to lead UC Irvine (6-4).

In Golden State Athletic Conference men's tennis:

Southern California College 5, Point Loma Nazarene 4--SCC (7-1, 5-0) won five of six singles matches to edge Point Loma Nazarene.

In the USC quad nonconference track and field meet:

Gauss wins twice--UC Irvine junior Ryan Gauss won the 1,500 meters (3:57.59) and 3,000 meters (8:38.51).

In team scoring, Irvine's men were 1-2 and Cal State Fullerton 0-3 in dual-meet scoring against USC and Cal State Northridge; Irvine defeated Fullerton, 77-62. Irvine's women were 0-2 against USC and Northridge.
