NHL ROUNDUP : Brett Lindros Finally Scores, Islanders Win, 3-1

March 08, 1995|From Associated Press

It wasn't pretty, but Brett Lindros will take it.

The New York Islander rookie right wing scored his first NHL goal in Tuesday night's 3-1 victory over the Hartford Whalers at Uniondale, N.Y.

"It wasn't the sweetest goal, but it went in," Lindros said. "I was so stuffed up, I couldn't sleep last night. I felt terrible in warm-ups. It's amazing what a goal can do."

Derek King and Benoit Hogue scored the other New York goals as the Islanders beat the Whalers for the first time in four tries.

Philadelphia 4, Tampa Bay 3--John LeClair scored his 11th and 12th goals, and Eric Lindros had two assists at St. Petersburg, Fla., as the Flyers moved past .500 for the first time this season.

Quebec 5, Pittsburgh 4--Alexei Gusarov scored with 58 seconds to play at Pittsburgh as the Nordiques strengthened their hold on first place in the Northeast Division. The Nordiques have a league-best 35 points, three more than Pittsburgh.

Calgary 6, Chicago 3--Joe Nieuwendyk outraced Chicago goalie Ed Belfour to a loose puck about 40 feet from the net and scored the tiebreaking goal with 7:53 to play at Chicago.

Nieuwendyk added a power-play goal and Ronnie Stern's goal clinched it as Calgary beat Chicago for the first time since 1991.

Washington 3, Boston 1--Jim Carey stopped 36 shots at Boston, improving his record to 4-0 since being promoted from the minors and giving the Capitals their fourth consecutive victory.
