GIRLS' SWIMMING AND DIVING 1995: PREVIEW : Six Teams To Watch : EL TORO

March 09, 1995

Coach: Sheri Ross (20th year).

1994: 14-2, 5-1 in the South Coast League. Lost to Mission Viejo in the league finals, then finished sixth at Division I finals.

Key returners: Kenisha Jespersen (diver), Jr.; Christie Kennedy, So.; Katie Lowes, Jr.; Alice Park, Sr.; Lindsey Rock, Sr.; Katie Simmons, Jr.; Amy Sloan (diver), Sr.; Keri Wilson Jr.

Key newcomers: Summir Case, So.

Outlook: Though El Toro has moved out of the South Coast League and away from rival Mission Viejo, the Chargers won't get a break from tough competitors. In fact, they will have to face Irvine, which could be the strongest team in Orange County. Simmons, perhaps the the second-best breaststroker in the county, and Lowes, who will be the one to beat in the 200 freestyle, anchor the Chargers. Seniors Park and Rock are expected to provide top performances. No doubt El Toro will have some great medley and freestyle relay teams and its diving team will add needed points in the duals. Ross said this season will mark the first time in her 20 years that a freshman has not started on the varsity.
