STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT / GIRLS' ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Ends Crenshaw's Unbeaten Season, 72-57

Santa Ana Mater Dei High used an 11-2 run midway through the fourth quarter en route to a 72-57 victory over Crenshaw, ending the Cougars' unbeaten season in the second round of the Southern Regional Division I girls' basketball playoffs Thursday night at Cal State Fullerton.

Mater Dei forward Melody Peterson, despite a stiff back and sitting out most the first quarter in foul trouble, scored 25 points to lead the Monarchs (27-1).

Crenshaw (29-1)--reaching the second round of the regionals for the first time--trailed at halftime, 31-25.

Center Naila Moseley's game-high 34 points helped the Cougars pull within one point, 42-41, with 1:26 remaining in the third quarter. But they would get no closer.

Fresno Clovis West 67, Ventura Buena 39--USC-bound Adrain Williams, a 6-foot-3 center, had 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots to lead Clovis West (25-2) over visiting Buena (24-3) in a Division I game. Paige Bowie, a 5-11 junior forward, added 22 points for Clovis West, which has won 16 in a row.

Brea Olinda 56, Mission Hills Alemany 52--Lee Moulin made seven three-point baskets, scoring 21 points, to lead the Wildcats (30-2) over the Alemany (25-6) in a Division II game at Brea Olinda.

Kelli McKay led Alemany with 15 points.

Irvine Woodbridge 47, Pasadena Muir 31--Erin Stovall scored 17 points to lead the Warriors (31-1) to a Division II victory over Muir (25-3).

Newbury Park 47, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 39--The Panthers (30-1) made seven of nine free throws in the final 70 seconds and survived Bishop Montgomery's fourth-quarter rally in a Division III game at Newbury Park.

Santa Ynez 82, Corcoran 67--Kristi Rohr scored 39 points to lead the Pirates (31-1) to a Division IV victory over Corcoran (28-4) at Santa Ynez.

Cerritos Valley Christian 62, Morro Bay 39--Tandee Taylor scored 26 points to lead the Crusaders (23-3) to a Division IV victory over Morro Bay (25-4) at Valley Christian.
