EAST LOS ANGELES : Scholarships Offered for College Students

March 12, 1995

The TELACU Education Foundation is accepting applications for its 1995-96 scholarship program, which will award 250 scholarships ranging from $500 to $10,000.

To be eligible, students must be permanent residents of Los Angeles, Montebello, Commerce, Bell Gardens or Monterey Park. They must demonstrate financial need, have a grade-point average of at least 2.5 and plan to attend a local participating college or university on a full-time basis.

The foundation was formed by the East Los Angeles Community Union, a nonprofit group, in 1991 to provide additional resources for Latino college students.

Most scholarships are between $500 and $1,500 a year, and freshmen may qualify for a four-year award of up to $6,000. Special grants are also available, including the Eastman Kodak Scholarship, which gives $10,000 to an engineering student, and the Richard Alatorre Fellowship, which provides $10,000 for graduate work in law or public administration.

Also available through the TELACU Foundation are the Southern California Edison Awards, which give $5,000 to two education students.

The deadline for applications is April 21 and all finalists must be available for interviews May 13 or 14.

In addition, college students are encouraged to apply for a variety of internship opportunities arranged by TELACU with government, private and nonprofit organizations.

For the first time, the TELACU Education Foundation will provide students the opportunity to work and study at the Washington Center, in Washington. The semester program is geared toward juniors and seniors in college and graduate students who are interested in government and public service.

The deadline for applying for internships is March 24.

To apply for a scholarship or internship, mail a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: TELACU Education Foundation, 5400 E. Olympic Blvd., Suite 300, Los Angeles, Calif. 90020. Specify either "Scholarship" or "Internship."
