Giving Away Soap Plots

March 19, 1995

In reference to soap operas, I believe it is not in the best interest of the viewers or the programs for the networks to release to the press (soap opera magazines, etc.) what will happen in upcoming episodes.

Speaking from a viewer's point of view, when you know in advance what is going to happen, a very crucial and important element is lost: namely, suspense.

A prime example: as tragic as the O.J. Simpson situation is, if one knew the outcome of the trial, 99% of the interest would be lost.

It's just not as exciting to watch the soaps, even if the acting and writing is excellent, when the plot has already been given away to me, and I know exactly what will transpire.
