HIGH SCHOOL TRACK AND FIELD : Agoura's Duley to Step Down as Track Coach

March 23, 1995|JOHN ORTEGA | TIMES STAFF WRITER

AGOURA HILLS — Bill Duley, the boys' and girls' track and field coach at Agoura High since 1986, will resign at the end of the season.

Chris Lewis, a 1992 graduate of Agoura and current assistant coach, will replace Duley.

Duley, 38, said he will continue to coach the boys' and girls' cross-country teams and work with the distance runners during track season, but that the administrative responsibilities of being a head coach have become tiresome.

"There's so much paperwork anymore and it really takes up a lot of time and energy," Duley said. "Sometimes, there's so much paperwork to take care of that I'm tired before I even get out on the track."

Duley would also like to spend more time with his wife, Cindy, and their children, Shannon, 10, and Jack, 6. "The kids are at the age where they need a lot of help with their homework and things like that," Duley said. "I want to be a part of that."

Although Lewis is only 20, Duley said he has the qualities needed to be a successful head coach. Lewis was an assistant at Calabasas in 1993 and is in his second season at Agoura.

"I've been thinking about making this move for a couple of years now," Duley said. "But I didn't want to release the position until I felt comfortable about the person who would replace me."

Agoura's cross-country program has brought Duley the most acclaim--the Chargers won the State Division I girls' title in 1990, '91 and '92 and have won nine individual state championships--but he also has a fine track record.

The Agoura girls won the 1-A (now Division IV) title in 1988 and '89, and have placed seventh or better in the last seven section championships at various levels.

The Charger boys won the section 1-A Division title in 1989, were third in 1990 and fifth in '88. The boys' and girls' teams won Marmonte League titles in 1992 and '93.
