VALLEY NEWSWATCH

March 25, 1995|Jeff Schnaufer

DROP ZONE: For the second time this week, a Cal State Northridge coach has resigned. . . . This time it was Kim Chandler, who departed Friday after four seasons as women's basketball coach (C14). Matador football Coach Bob Burt resigned Wednesday. But the similarities end there: Burt was the Matadors' winningest football coach. Chandler never had a winning season.

RELIGIOUS FERVOR: A Roman Catholic group succeeded Friday in forcing a Disney-owned film company to change the national release date of the controversial movie "Priest." Catholic League officials were offended at the portrayal of depraved priests and the film's release on Good Friday. . . . Now the group wants Burbank-based Disney to dissociate itself from the film (B1).

PEACE CAMPAIGN: The Rev. Jesse Jackson was on the campaign trail again Friday. But this time, he wasn't seeking office. . . . As part of the county Probation Department's peace campaign, the former presidential candidate encouraged a turnaround in the lives of young offenders at Sylmar Juvenile Hall (B1). He reportedly also has another stop in L.A.: a visit with O.J. Simpson. Superior Court Judge Lance A. Ito gave his permission for the Sunday visit.

MINING GOLD: Valley College Coach Chris Johnson has struck gold. . . Four Dorado brothers--Juan, Javier, Jorge and Jaime--are in the Monarch baseball program (C14). And three of them are playing this year on a team that is in the race for the Western State Conference South Division. Said Johnson: "They have great baseball instincts."

NO RUSH: What's the buzz around the California Republican Party headquarters in Burbank now that Gov. Pete Wilson is exploring a bid for the presidency? Three words: wait and see. . . . "The state party has to stay neutral until after the primary in California on March 26, 1996," said one party functionary. "Then we can do our thing and get out the vote to support the nominee."
