CERRITOS : Council Gives Initial OK to Cigarette Vending Law

March 30, 1995|JOHN CANALIS

The City Council has tentatively approved an ordinance requiring establishments to place cigarette vending machines in areas inaccessible to minors.

The measure, which passed on a 4-1 vote, will require hotels, restaurants and bowling alleys to place machines in adults-only areas or in a location that can be monitored by an adult staff member.

There are about 10 cigarette machines in the city, officials said.

The new law should reduce the likelihood of children purchasing cigarettes in the city, Councilman Bruce W. Barrows said.

Councilman John F. Crawley opposed the ordinance, arguing that it will have little effect since neighboring cities do not have similar regulations. "It's going to be an inconvenience to adults who can legally smoke and cause a hardship to business," he said.
