Scholarship: Math Major Gets $6,000

A Santa Monica student has won a $6,000 scholarship for math and science majors who plan to enter teaching careers.

Maria Alcaraz, who is a single mother and receives Aid to Families With Dependent Children to supplement her income as an employee of the college, was the only Santa Monica College student to receive Southern California Edison Co.'s Community College Achievement Award.

Alcaraz, a math major, is planning to transfer this fall to UCLA or a California State University campus in the Los Angeles area.
