"Publishing a volume of verse is like dropping a rose petal down the Grand Canyon and waiting for the echo," said writer Don Marquis. Nevertheless, dedicated verse-makers will gather at the second annual Ventura Poetry Festival to celebrate their art and perform for an appreciative and growing audience.

Jackson Wheeler and Phil Taggart are co-directors of the eight-day festival, which is made possible by a grant from the city of Ventura Cultural Affairs Office. It's a rich menu. Start choosing.

We opened with a poet's quote. Let's close with another. "Like a piece of ice on a hot stove the poem must ride on its own melting"--from the preface to "Collected Works" by Robert Frost.
