Newspaper Ad Revenue Grows in 1st Quarter: U.S. newspapers reported a 6.77% gain in advertising revenue in the period, the Newspaper Assn. of America said. Advertising spending was $7.8 billion, compared to $7.4 billion for the first quarter of 1994. Spending for classified advertising, the second-largest newspaper advertising category, jumped 12.62% to $2.9 billion, the group said. In 1994, U.S. daily newspapers had, at 22.8%, the largest share of total advertising expenditures. Broadcast television was next at 20.8%. Direct mail had 19.8%, and radio had 7%, according to the newspaper group.
