June 11, 1995

A photography exhibit, "The African Americans," opens with a reception today at the Black Gallery fine art photography gallery, 107 Santa Barbara Plaza.

The exhibit showcases the newly published book of the same name, which details the everyday lives of black Americans in photos and text.

Dozens of photographers, both black and white, contributed to the work, including Anthony Barboza, Douglas Kirkland, Lester Sloan and Michael Allen Jones and Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe.

Subjects range from celebrities like Denzel Washington and Quincy Jones to local leaders such as the Rev. Cecil Murray of First A.M.E. Church.

The reception will be from 4 to 7 p.m. The exhibit runs through July 1 in conjunction with a series of works created for the exhibit, "African American Representations of Masculinity."
