June 15, 1995|FRANCES HALPERN | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The predicted demise of books--at the same time that more and more super bookstores are opening--is perplexing. Certainly, the Friends of the Camarillo Library has discovered that people do indeed love books: The Friends' April used-book sale netted $17,780, which is earmarked for new books and a building fund. The group's campaign to gather 20,000 books for its October sale is under way. Call 482-9988 for details.

A used-book sale at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Newbury Park Library, 2331 Borchard Road, will feature children's records and books and a large selection of fiction and nonfiction.

In a gentler time, people of all classes paused either at 4 or 5 p.m. to have tea and cakes. Author-photographer Michele Rivers has captured the essence of this 200-year-old tradition in her book, "Time For Tea," which features conversations with 13 Englishwomen who share recipes and personal memoirs. Rivers will read from and sign her book at 2:30 p.m. today at Tottenham Court, 242 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai.

*

Mary Embree, a Ventura writer and literary consultant, will sign "A Woman's Way" (a focused guide on how women can avoid smoking) at 6:30 tonight at a champagne reception, Ojai Table of Contents, 208 E. Ojai Ave.

At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Table of Contents, Susan Hillman will read tales about trolley cars to children.

*

Michel Englebert will read at 8 tonight at Cafe Voltaire, 34 N. Palm St., Ventura. Poets are encouraged to sign up at 7:30 p.m. for open readings.

*

Children 3 to 7 can hear stories about cats at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Barnes & Noble, 4360 E. Main St., Ventura.

Also at Barnes & Noble at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Mark Bagley, a Brooks Institute of Photography graduate, will demonstrate how to take great vacation pictures.

The submission deadline is June 28 for the "Caught in the Act of Reading" photo contest sponsored by the bookstore. Call 339-9170.
