CULVER CITY : Militia Leader Gets Prison Term, Fine

June 15, 1995|Associated Press

A federal judge in Fresno has sentenced a Culver City man to six months in prison for leading a paramilitary expedition into Sequoia National Forest.

Peter Clarke, 36, also was ordered Monday to pay a $2,200 fine to the U.S. Forest Service, which governs Sequoia National Forest. However, Clarke will not be imprisoned because he already has served a year in jail while awaiting trial.

Eight members of a group called the United States Enforcement Agency entered the forest in February, 1994, digging trenches to store weapons and uprooting trees and shrubs, an indictment said. U.S. Forest Service agents recovered guns, helmets, smoke grenades and military webbing.
