Annual Watts Summer Games Begin

The 28th annual All Sport L.A. Watts Summer Games kicked off Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

More than 12,000 high schools are participating in 15 different events. The games will conclude next Saturday and Sunday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Dorsey High, Fremont, Los Angeles, Jordan and Franklin will host men's basketball games, while Crenshaw, Manual Arts, Locke and Washington will serve as venues for women's basketball.

Events include baseball, football, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

This year's competition features some of next year's top stars.

Fremont junior Clarence Scott, who led the nation this season in the long jump with a mark of 25 feet 4 1/2 inches, will compete Saturday at Dominguez Hills.

In men's basketball, Fremont, Dorsey and Locke will challenge last year's State Division II runner-up, Dominguez of Compton.

Women's basketball showcases the top two teams from the Central City last season--City Section Division 4-A champion Crenshaw and runner-up Washington.

Sophomore Naila Moseley of Crenshaw, and juniors Tina Greer and Laneisha Williams of Washington are players to watch.

In volleyball, City 4-A runner-up Bell and City 3-A runner-up Marshall are expected to have a strong showing.

In baseball, City 3-A champion South Gate begins preparation for another title run.
