June 22, 1995|SUSAN STEINBERG

A 54-year-old man was fatally shot during an alleged robbery attempt over the weekend as he sat in his parked car in Playa del Rey, according to Los Angeles police.

The man, identified by police as Dixie Gibson of Los Angeles, died at the scene of the shooting--a street popular for watching the ocean or the airplanes taking off and landing at Los Angeles International Airport.

Police said Gibson suffered gunshot wounds to his upper body.

Police said they had few details on the slaying, only that Gibson was parked in the 100 block of Sandpiper Street near Vista Del Mar at 9:45 p.m. Saturday.

Apparently, several male suspects approached Gibson's car and tried to rob him, said LAPD Detective Bill Cox.
