Little Kid Gets Hands on a Big Wheel

June 25, 1995| Associated Press

COLEBROOK, N.H. — His bike wasn't up to speed, so a first-grader stole something with more horsepower to get him to school on time for the last day of class.

"I was at a stop sign when the guy with me said, 'Hey, there's a little kid driving that car,' " Police Chief Mike Sielicki said last week.

Sielicki followed the 1989 Ford Escort for two blocks. "I didn't want to turn the sirens on because I was afraid I'd scare him and he'd lose control of the car," said Sielicki, who declined to identify the boy.

The 7-year-old boy slammed on the brakes when he reached a busy intersection. He had put the car in park and was removing the keys from the ignition when Sielicki walked up.

"He looked at me and said, 'I was going to be late for school,' " Sielicki said. "We took him home and on the way he asked if he could drive the cruiser."
