BEVERLYWOOD : Hamilton Sophomore Wins Scholarship

June 25, 1995

A 10th-grade student from Hamilton High School has been named a 1995 Christopher Scholar.

Norma Sanchez was one of five Los Angeles Unified high school students to receive the award, which carries a $12,000 scholarship upon graduation from high school.

Each Christopher Scholar who graduates from high school with a 3.25 grade-point average or higher will receive an additional $4,000 scholarship.

A member of the girls' junior varsity basketball team, Norma grew up speaking only Spanish and did not learn English until after she started school.

Named for U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher, the scholarship fund was established by the law firm of O'Melveny and Myers. Christopher, who was the firm's chairman until 1993, is an alumnus of Hollywood High School.
