Romanian Memories

June 25, 1995

Regarding "Romania's Holy Treasures" (April 16): For more adventure, try a self-drive trip. The Romanian Tourist Bureau will send you off with pre-planned stops, if you wish, and a map showing the all-important gas stations. Warning: Speed limits change abruptly and fines are collectible on the spot.

In 1988, they must have regretted allowing two middle-age American ladies to start off by themselves. A guide arrived about midnight at our first stop 100 miles from Bucharest. When we ascertained he did not know how to drive nor change a tire, we stood firm until he contacted his superiors and he was allowed to return and we were allowed to proceed.
