PLAY MST: Dave Alvin may seem like a serious-minded rocker sometimes, but he has a weakness for the Comedy Central B-movie showcase "Mystery Science Theatre 3000"--so much so that, since he doesn't have cable TV himself, he has friends tape the show for him.

That loyalty has paid off: Alvin was chosen to perform the narrative theme song for the upcoming movie based on the show. Alvin recorded the song recently, with some vocal help from Kevin Murphy, the voice of "MST3K" robot Tom Servo. The movie is due in February. Alvin says there's talk of an accompanying album, possibly featuring his performance and some of the parody songs that have been on the TV series.
