Decision Delayed on Filing Charges Against Rodney King

August 17, 1995

Rodney G. King showed up in Alhambra Municipal Court on Wednesday as ordered on his domestic violence arrest last month, but a judge released him after prosecutors said they have yet to file charges.

Judge Carlos Uranga told King he was free to go and that his $50,000 bail would be returned if charges are not filed within 15 days. No return court date was set for King--whose 1991 videotaped beating by Los Angeles police sparked widespread outrage.

In his latest brush with the law, King, 29, was arrested July 14 by Alhambra police on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence. He had driven his car away while his wife was reaching into it, knocking her onto a street, according to authorities.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Stanley Williams said a decision on whether to charge King is on hold pending the results of an investigation by the Family Violence Division of the district attorney's office.
