Learn the ABCs of Home Buying at Times Fair

August 20, 1995

Are you thinking about purchasing a home in this tempting buyer's market? Are you daunted by the complexity of the decision? Well, help is on the way.

The basics of buying a home, one of life's most personal and perplexing decisions, will be covered in five workshops at a Home Buyers Fair sponsored by the Los Angeles Times on Sept. 16 at the Burbank Airport Hilton Hotel & Convention Center, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank. The fair will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You can take part in the instructional step-by-step workshops, which will offer essential hands-on information about buying the right home at the right price and finding the appropriate mortgage for your situation.

You will learn how to do savvy comparison shopping, keeping track of homes you have looked at and ranking them by quality, location and affordability. Real estate author and computer expert Steve Lyons will present a special session on getting organized for a smart house search.

There will also be special presentations on schools, alternatives to long commutes and neighborhood crime rates.

Lawyer and real estate expert Ronald Galperin will present a panel on avoiding the legal land mines in a home purchase. Also, you can check your credit and learn how to fix credit reporting mistakes. You can also learn how to pre-qualify for a loan and then do so at the fair.

Among the dozens of exhibitors will be major lenders, realtors and government agencies including the Internal Revenue Service, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

A five-part step-by-step workshop series on the ABCs of home buying will run from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The series will be kicked off with a session on credit followed by those on selecting the right home loan, the best real estate agent, the ideal neighborhood and the perfect house.

Admission is $5 per person, or $4 with a coupon from The Times. Children under 12 are free. For consumer information, call TimesLine at 808-8463 and press *9420 at the prompt. For information about exhibiting, call (800) 775-4662.
