PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : NFC : Eagles Shuffle Davis Out of Lineup

August 22, 1995

The Philadelphia Eagles, searching for the right offensive line combination, have shuffled the deck, and the odd-man out is former first-round draft choice Antone Davis.

Davis, a five-year veteran who has started in 60 of the 63 Eagle games in which he's played, was slated to start at right tackle. But Coach Ray Rhodes, apparently disgruntled with Davis' work in training camp, will start veteran right guard Lester Holmes at right tackle for Thursday night's exhibition game with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Joe Panos, who had been at left guard, will move to right guard, and former San Francisco 49er Guy McIntyre, a free agent acquisition earlier this month, will be at left guard.

The Green Bay Packers released former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, their fifth-round draft choice, saying he did not have the necessary arm strength to compete in the NFL. . . . The Carolina Panthers cut 11 players, including linebacker Willie Brookins of East Carolina. . . . The Atlanta Falcons signed 16-year veteran offensive lineman Jim Ritcher and cut veteran running back Blair Thomas. . . . Fourth-year fullback Anthony McDowell was cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. . . . The St. Louis Rams placed offensive tackle Jackie Slater, who's recovering from off-season elbow surgery, on the reserve-physically unable to perform list.
