Documentary Congress Set at Academy

August 28, 1995

The second International Documentary Congress will be held Oct. 25-28 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, 8949 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills.

Scheduled participants include directors Michael Apted, Richard Leacock, Allie Light and Marina Goldovaskaya. The congress will feature panel discussions and round-table sessions; an opening-night tribute to German director Marcel Ophuls; "Five Voices/Five Visions," an exploration of the state of nonfiction film through the eyes of five female filmmakers from different parts of the world, on Oct. 26 at the academy; and the Independent Documentary Assn.'s annual DocuFest, a daylong festival at LACMA on Oct. 28.

At the IDA's 11th annual awards gala Oct. 27, Ophuls will be honored for career achievement. The five winners of the IDA's documentary competitions and the IDA/David L. Wolper student achievement award winner will also be recognized.

The academy and the congress are also sponsoring "In and Out of the Cold/1945-1995: Documenting 50 Years of Change," a retrospective of more than 80 documentaries relating to post-World War II political and social issues. It begins at the L.A. County Museum of Art on Sept. 26 and continues through Oct. 30 at various venues. IDA: (310) 284-8422; academy: (310) 247-3000, ext. 176.
