Sinister Anonymity

October 01, 1995

Most of the comments about "Our New Faceless Monsters" in cyberspace (by Michael D'Antonio, Aug. 27) also apply to anonymous telephone calls. Still, consumer groups have consistently blocked application of the Caller ID feature. In California and elsewhere, the "terror and nastiness cloaked in a sinister anonymity" has been deemed of more importance than a consumer's right to know who is calling before answering the phone.

Will the same forces fight with equal vigor to ensure that cybernauts suffer the same inconvenience as Internet access becomes as important as telephone access?
