VENTURA : Grade Schools Hold Fun Fund-Raisers

October 04, 1995|CATHERINE SAILLANT

Two Ventura elementary schools will hold fund-raisers this week to raise money for new library books, computer software and other items that the state does not fund.

Loma Vista School on Lynn Drive will conduct its Laps for Leopards event at 8:30 a.m. Thursday on the playground, said Nancy Garrett, a parent who is helping coordinate the event. The school mascot is the leopard, Garrett said.

Students will be instructed to complete each lap around the playground in a different way, she said. The first lap might be a race-walk, for instance, and the second a bunny hop, Garrett said.

Money will be raised by donations pledged for each lap completed, she said. The school hopes to raise about $12,000 with the fund-raiser, one of two benefits held each year, she said.

On Friday, the Parent-Teacher Organization at Poinsettia School will hold a Sport-a-Thon, said spokeswoman Pamela Lindsay. Each student will collect sponsor pledges and then take part in one of four events: jogging, soccer, jumping rope and bicycling.

In the past, the school has raised more than $25,000 from this event, Lindsay said. The fund-raiser begins at 10:30 a.m. on school grounds.
