Burbank's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program needs volunteers 55 and older to assist with bookkeeping at the Burbank Temporary Aid Center, prepare and clean tables for the Joslyn Center Nutrition Program or provide foster care for older German shepherds as part of the German Shepherd Rescue program. * The Mountains Education Program needs docents for the William O. Douglas Outdoor Classroom in Franklin Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains. The program teaches thousands of schoolchildren and other visitors about respecting and preserving the environment. The next 10-week docent training program begins Saturday. Once trained, docents lead interpretive walks for elementary school groups on weekday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information, call (310) 858-3090.

* The School Volunteer Program of the Los Angeles Unified School District needs help in San Fernando Valley schools. Volunteers can be a classroom tutor or help with art and music, the library, career guidance, English as a second language, homework assistance and school beautification. Also, the Each One-Reach One mentor program needs volunteers to create a one-to-one relationship with a student at risk of dropping out. For more information, call (213) 625-6900.

* Malibu Creek State Park is recruiting trainees to become docents who would greet the public at the visitors center, offer guided nature programs and work with school groups. Trainees would pay $40 to help cover expenses, such as for printed materials and guest speakers. Training sessions will be at Trippet Ranch Nature Center in Topanga Canyon from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on alternate Saturdays through Dec. 2. For more information, call John Abel at (310) 456-8384.
