On New Surface, Carstens Races to Landslide Victory

October 08, 1995|DARIN ESPER | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

VENTURA — A minor mudslide in Ventura County paid a big dividend for Rick Carstens of Fresno on Saturday night at Ventura Raceway.

Carstens took advantage of a fresh layer of clay on the quarter-mile oval to run away with the 30-lap Winged Mini Sprint feature, posting a three-quarter-lap victory over Clay Klepper of Caruthers before 1,181.

Promoter Jim Naylor obtained the new surface last week from the remains of a collapsed hillside.

Carstens started sixth in the 12-car field and needed only five laps to take command from pole-sitter Newt Price of Visalia.

In four laps, Carstens had a 10-length advantage, and he opened a half-lap lead by the midway point in the race.

At the end, Carstens had lapped all but five cars.

Bruce Dorn of Los Angeles took the 20-lap Dwarf Car feature, Randy Moody of Ventura won the 20-lap Sprint Car main event and Gary Hubert of Somis captured a 10-lap I-4 Modified exhibition.

In the Dwarf Car race, Dorn chased down Tom Stansberry of Tehachapi. Stansberry grabbed the lead on the start, while Dorn worked his way through the pack, moving into second on the fifth lap.

The cars dueled for 12 laps before Dorn slipped past Stansberry with three laps remaining.

Hubert, who was the 1993 Ventura Raceway Mini Stock champion, went wire to wire in his race, which was a preview of a new class that is scheduled to compete at Ventura in 1996.
