ROUNDUP : Buena Sails to Victory in the Channel League

Matthew Streeton finished fourth, James Hipskind was fifth and Adam Matthews ran sixth, leading Buena High to victory in the second Channel League cross-country meet of the season Wednesday.

Streeton timed 17 minutes 7 seconds over the three-mile course at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. Hipskind clocked 17:14 with Matthews at 17:18 as Buena (14-0, 14-0 in the league) placed five runners among the top 12 finishers to finish with 38 points.

Rio Mesa, paced by the 2-3 finish of Ronald Almager and Scott Johnsen, finished second with 42 points, followed by Dos Pueblos (70), Oxnard (131) and San Marcos (156).

With victories in the first two league meets, Buena can win a share of its second league title in the last three years with a third-place finish in the league final Nov. 2.

GIRLS' CROSS-COUNTRY

Dos Pueblos 42, Buena 44, Santa Barbara 64, Ventura 112, Rio Mesa 128, San Marcos 138, Oxnard 213, Hueneme 220--Stacy Hebert of Buena won the second Channel League meet of the season, but the Bulldogs (13-1, 13-1) were upset by Dos Pueblos (13-1 in the league) in the team competition.

Hebert, a standout 300-meter hurdler who is in her first season of cross-country, clocked 20:17 over the three-mile course at Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.

Barb Almaraz finished sixth at 21:22 and Amy Golden was ninth in 21:32, but Buena lost its first meet in league competition since 1982.

"My kids ran well, but Dos Pueblos just ran a little better," Buena Coach Steve Blum said.

Agoura 16, Camarillo 41; Agoura 15, Simi Valley 43; Camarillo 23, Simi Valley 32--Led by Jessica Lepisto, Agoura (3-0, 3-0) swept the first four places and had five of the top six finishers in the Marmonte League meet.

Lepisto timed 19:46 over the three-mile course.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 3, La Verne 3--Jill Gallegos, Deanna Luque and Holly Roepke scored as the Regals (11-2-2, 7-0-1) tied the Leopards (11-2-1, 6-1-1) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran.

USC 3, Pepperdine 2--The Waves (2-7-2) got second-half goals from Jen Evans and Sally Finger in a nonconference loss to the Trojans (6-5-1) at Pepperdine.

The Master's 10, Biola 0--Sarah De Wolf had three goals for the Mustangs (7-6).

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Valley 16, Pierce 9--Jeff Bissel and Armond Abramian each scored three goals as the Monarchs (12-7-2, 2-1) defeated the Brahmas in a Western State Conference match at Pierce.

Cuesta 11, Ventura 9--Janko Gogolja, David Ford, Andy Bruininga and Jeremy Pickles each had two goals but couldn't overcome a 6-1 deficit in the WSC match. The Pirates (15-4-1), ranked third in the state, lost to No. 4 Cuesta (13-5-1, 2-1) for the first time in three meetings.
