COUNTYWIDE FOCUS

Seminars Scheduled on Radon in Homes

October 13, 1995|DAVID R. BAKER

As part of National Radon Action Week, the American Lung Assn. of Ventura County will conduct a series of public seminars starting Saturday about the invisible, cancer-causing gas.

Of all the counties in California, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties face the greatest risk of radon gas, according to the association. The radioactive gas seeps out of underground rocks and can collect in homes. It is a leading cause of lung cancer, second only to smoking.

"This is a very significant danger," said Tom Leese, the association's radon project leader. "The idea is to get people to test their homes to see if they've got a problem."

The seminars will be held from Saturday through Oct. 20 at the Home Depot stores in Oxnard and Newbury Park. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, area residents can watch videotapes about radon and ask questions of association members. People can also purchase kits to test their homes for radon gas or get coupons to buy the kits at a discount.

A follow-up workshop will be held Nov. 4 at the Oxnard Home Depot for those who want to rid their homes of radon gas.
