Fire Destroys Homes in '91 Disaster Area

October 14, 1995|Associated Press

OAKLAND — A brush fire in the Oakland hills, scene of a disaster in 1991, destroyed three homes and damaged six others Friday before it was contained, officials said.

The fire went to six alarms and sent thick clouds of smoke aloft before firefighters stopped the flames' spread about 12:15 p.m., Oakland fire Capt. Don Parker said. He said one person was hospitalized, suffering from smoke inhalation.

By midafternoon, firefighters were mopping up hot spots.

The fire carried scary overtones of the disaster four years ago this month, when flames killed 25 people and destroyed 3,000 dwellings.
