ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : Servite Cruises by Santa Ana in League Opener

October 14, 1995|FORREST LEE | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

FULLERTON — What seemed like an impressive outing for Servite did not satisfy its head coach.

Servite opened defense ofits Golden West title with a dominating 42-13 victory over Santa Ana Friday night before 1,800 at Cal State Fullerton.

Three touchdown runs by Vince Reed sparked a 28-point first half by the Friars, who broke a 7-7 tie in the second quarter and coasted.

Servite played its reserves for most of the second half. Still, Servite Coach Larry Toner said his team didn't play well.

"I wasn't pleased with our performance," he said. "If we had performed and executed well, I might not feel that way. I just didn't think we played well."

Toner's main complaint was the Friars' inability to completely shut down Santa Ana running back Ladon Robinson, who finished with 126 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Robinson, who has been a one-man show on offense this season, also passed for a score midway through the fourth quarter, after Servite had a comfortable lead. He also had a 69-yard touchdown run called back because of a holding penalty.

"We expected [Robinson] to be good and he was," Toner said. "He's obviously a tough kid. But we let him [run] too much."

But Robinson and his teammates were no match for Servite (4-2, 1-1). After Robinson scored on a 90-yard touchdown with 1:47 left in the first quarter to tie the score, 7-7, the Friars blew away Santa Ana (1-5, 0-1).
