ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / PREP EXTRA : ORANGE LEAGUE : Brea Olinda's Davis Finds Range in Victory

October 14, 1995|MIKE WOJCIECHOWSKI | SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

BREA — Scott Davis, who made only one of five field-goal attempts entering Friday night's game, was successful on tries of 29 and 47 yards in the third quarter and the tough Brea Olinda defense limited Anaheim running back Reuben Droughns to 39 yards as the Wildcats defeated the Colonists, 13-6, in the Orange League opener for both schools.

Davis has been perfect in 14 conversion attempts this season but had only a 38-yard field goal in nonleague action. A third field-goal attempt was botched by a bad snap.

Droughns, who moved into fifth place in the career country rushing list with 4,440 yards, had one run for 23 yards in the first quarter as Anaheim drove to the Brea 10 before a 27-yard field-goal attempt failed. Droughns could produce only 15 yards on his remaining 17 carries as the Wildcats stopped the Anaheim rushing game.

Brea (4-2, 1-0 in league) capped an 80-yard scoring drive on quarterback Matt Kalcevich's six-yard run for a touchdown.

Anaheim (1-5, 0-1) scored on the final play of the first half on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Luis Gomez to Jesus Acevedo. The conversion attempt failed because of a bad snap, leaving Anaheim behind, 7-6, at halftime. The scoring drive was set up on an interception by Droughns.

Brea controlled the ball for most of the third quarter with the first field goal coming on the opening drive of the half with 4:33 left.

Anaheim had an opportunity to score late in the fourth quarter but a fourth-down pass was deflected by Jason Crysler to stop one drive. A fumble recovery by Nesto Acosta on the Brea 38 gave Anaheim one more chance with two minutes left. Eric Albrecht's blitz for an eight-yard loss, a pass completion for minus-three yards and two incomplete passes stopped the threat.
