ROUNDUP : Northridge Swept Again; Losing Streak Reaches 19

Rene Goth of Cal State Northridge had nine kills and 13 digs, but the visiting Matadors suffered their 19th consecutive loss, falling to Cal State Fullerton in a nonconference match Wednesday, 15-1, 18-16, 15-9.

Goth, the only returning starter from last year's team that posted a 23-8 record and won the National Invitational Volleyball Championship, had a .296 hitting percentage.

Carrie Kapfenberg and Erin Balderama each had seven kills for the Matadors (1-22), but their hitting percentages were .065 and .038, respectively.

Shelly Smith had 16 kills and 15 digs for Fullerton (7-14).

GIRLS' CROSS-COUNTRY

Thousand Oaks 15, Camarillo 49; Thousand Oaks 20, Westlake 39; Westlake 23, Camarillo 34--Thousand Oaks Coach Jack Farrell held top runner Kim Mortensen out of the meet so she will be rested for Saturday's Mt. San Antonio College Invitational. Still, the Lancers (5-0, 5-0) took five of the top seven places in the Marmonte League meet at Cal Lutheran.

Team ranking--The ranking of Thousand Oaks High's girls' cross country team was incorrectly reported Thursday. The Lancers are sixth in the West region poll and not ranked among the top 25 teams in the country.

Thousand Oaks' Tara Marsden timed 19 minutes 45 seconds over the three-mile course to edge Westlake's Joy Pompilio (19:46).

BOYS' CROSS-COUNTRY

Thousand Oaks 25, Camarillo 31; Thousand Oaks 18, Westlake 44; Camarillo 21, Westlake 38--Todd Disney and Josh Carolan placed first and second for Thousand Oaks (5-0, 5-0) in a Marmonte League meet at Cal Lutheran.

Disney and Carolan ran together until the final 100 meters, when Disney sprinted ahead for a one-second victory at 16:26.

MEN'S WATER POLO

Ventura 15, Chaffey 5--Andy Bruininga scored seven goals--missing only one shot--for host Ventura in a Western State Conference match. Goalie Paulo Teixeira had 13 saves for the Pirates (19-5-1, 3-1), the state's No. 2-ranked team.

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

Royal 20, Newbury Park 11--Chris Richeson scored seven goals, and John Voegtli and David Radka each added three for host Royal in a Marmonte League match.

Goalie Kyle Finley had 11 saves and a length-of-the-pool goal for the Highlanders (17-4, 4-0), the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division IV poll.

Burroughs 7, Montebello 5--The host Indians scored two goals in the last 24 seconds of the Almont League match. Alfonso Tucay scored to give Burroughs (14-4, 2-0) a 6-5 lead. Greg Paggi added his third goal with one second left.

Crespi 8, St. Francis 7--Chris Helin scored with 2:33 left to give visiting Crespi (7-12, 2-3) an 8-6 lead in the Mission League match.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL

Village Christian d. Vasquez, 15-4, 15-0, 15-3--Mariann Parker had four kills and Ashley Wornall added four aces for host Village Christian (11-1, 6-0) in an Alpha League match.

El Camino Real d. Cleveland, 15-7, 15-8, 15-10--Diane Rodriguez had seven aces for the host Conquistadores (6-4, 3-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.
