Robin Abcarian's column "Tiny Steps on a Path to a Saner World" (Oct. 8) was greatly appreciated. I wish to add yet another way to reach those at-risk children.
For those of us who love the outdoors and believe in the healing power of nature there are organizations like William O. Douglas Outdoor Classroom, the Audobon Society's Wetland Program and the Sierra Club's Inner City Outings Committee that take disadvantaged children in groups on outings. It lets these children know that there is a world outside of the asphalt jungle that can also be their world.
Volunteer docents (nature guides) are needed for all these endeavors. Training is offered at no cost to the volunteer and from the enthusiastic letters sent by children after the outing you know you have made a difference.
