WHAT'S THE DEAL?

BODY WATCH : Poor Baby! That Rash Can Hurt

October 24, 1995|KATHLEEN DOHENY

Diaper rash, though rarely serious, can be a bugaboo of babyhood. More than 60% of babies between 4 and 15 months get it at least once in any two-month period, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. Peak age: 8 to 10 months. Self-care can help, but call the doctor if the rash persists beyond two or three days, experts say. How to reduce the misery:

* Fresh air (leaving off diaper for 10 to 15 minutes between changes), gratis.

* Sitz bath, free.

* Balmex diaper rash ointment, 2 ounces, $3.66.

* Desitin cornstarch baby powder, 14 ounces, $4.49.
