What Makes Movies Work

October 28, 1995

Re "A Scary Time at the Box Office," (Calendar, Oct. 20). Maybe the movie execs will finally realize that not everyone enjoys a steady diet of nudity, graphic violence and profanity, and that some of us don't like it at all. Maybe they'll realize that a good movie needs more than bare skin and big names: It also needs a plot. As for "Seven" being a hit, you can sum that up in two words: Brad Pitt. I don't go to R movies, but I was sorely tempted to go to this one just to see him. But, after reading that the movie was like spending an hour in the morgue, I decided to stay home and watch reruns of "Dick Van Dyke."
