Prep Football Playoff Capsules : Division I

November 14, 1995|CHRIS FOSTER

Defending champion: Mater Dei, which defeated La Puente Bishop Amat, 28-21

Seeded teams: 1. Fontana (10-0); 2. Long Beach Poly (10-0); 3. Esperanza (8-2); 4. Los Alamitos (9-1).

Dark horse: Rialto Eisenhower (8-2), whose two losses are to Long Beach Poly, 7-3, and Fontana, 12-0.

Notes: Mater Dei has played in the last two Division I championship games. The Monarchs lost to Eisenhower in 1993, then beat Bishop Amat last season. Loyola was the last team to play in three consecutive title games (1962-64) . . . Tough draw for the Monarchs, who were South Coast League tri-champions. The Monarchs face a solid Bellflower St. John Bosco team in the first round, then probably will have to beat Los Alamitos and Fontana just to get to the title game . . . Los Alamitos enters the playoffs with a loss for the first time since 1991. Still, the Griffins have outscored opponents, 128-13, in three games since losing to Esperanza, 21-17 . . . Fontana has given up only 33 points this season and has five shutouts. The Steelers' offense is lead by running back Art Gipson, who has 1,207 yards rushing and has scored 14 touchdowns . . . Long Beach Poly is more consistent on offense this season with running back Akka-ar Moses (1,106 yards rushing) and quarterback Morris Smith (1,400 yards passing). The Jackrabbits beat Esperanza, 24-19, this season. Esperanza turned the ball over four times against Long Beach Poly. All were turned into points . . . St. John Bosco gave up only 23 points in five Del Rey League games, yet finished third.
