Nation IN BRIEF : DELAWARE : Student Carrying Grenade Is Disarmed

February 08, 1996|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

An 11th-grader carrying a live hand grenade was disarmed by his principal at a suburban Wilmington high school. Brandywine High School principal Donald Fantine said he took the grenade from the student after calling him to his office to check on a tip about the grenade. The device was homemade and could not have been triggered by pulling a pin. "But depending on the age of the device, the powder could have gone off from heat or friction," Fantine said. After a police bomb technician disassembled the grenade, it was disposed of at Dover Air Force Base. When asked why he was carrying the grenade, the student "gave us several different stories," according to Fantine.
