Scott Taylor has been hired to coach water polo at Costa Mesa High, Athletic Director Jerry Howell said Friday.

Taylor, who will continue to work as a walk-on coach, has been an assistant with the program for the last two years. He was an All-Southern Section goalkeeper on Costa Mesa's Southern Section championship teams of 1986 and '87.

Taylor, 25, replaces Brian Kreutzkamp, who returned to college after two years at the helm. Costa Mesa won the Division II championship last season.

Edison, winner of seven games in a row, won a coin flip on Friday and will enter the Division I-A girls' basketball playoffs as the Sunset League's first-place team. Marina will be the league's second-place team.

The schools tied for first place, along with Fountain Valley, but the Barons compete in Division I-AA so were exempt from the tie-breaking procedure.

Santa Margarita's Matt Nickels, an All-Sea View League wide receiver, has committed to Dartmouth, Eagle Coach Jim Hartigan said. Nickels, 6 feet 2, 190 pounds, will be the sixth Santa Margarita player to play Ivy League football.

Newport Harbor's Jenny Hecker, the Sea View League's most valuable girls' volleyball player, has signed a letter of intent to attend Loyola Marymount. She was a Times Orange County first-team selection. Another volleyball player, Corona del Mar setter Melissa Ford, has committed to Princeton.
