SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS' BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS

Division Iv-aa

February 13, 1996|MIKE TERRY

Defending champion--Corona del Mar, which has moved to Division III-A.

Top teams--Morro Bay (22-1), Twentynine Palms (17-5), Agoura Oak Park (16-7), Carpinteria (17-6).

Dark horse: Banning (14-11). The Broncos sport one of the bigger front lines in the tournament: 6-5, 220-pound senior Steve Newton (16 points, nine rebounds); 6-5, 210-pound senior Jenero Jordan (19 points, 10 rebounds) and 6-3, 240-pound senior Henry Stevens (10 points, 10 rebounds).

Top players: Brian Benza (Carpinteria), Nate Frost (Riverside Notre Dame), Gary Gillman (Morro Bay), Shamar Griffin (Pasadena Marshall Fundamental), Kaleb Ranney (Beaumont), Enver Soobzokov (Laguna Beach), Justin Vitolla (Rosamond).

Notes: Laguna Beach is the only county team in this division. The Artists (10-12), who received an at-large berth, travel to Agoura Oak Park on Friday. . . . This might be Morro Bay's best chance to win its first section title. The Pirates have nine seniors on the roster, led by Gillman, who averages 33 points. Their only loss was to Oxnard, a Division I-A team. . . . Banning is trying for its first section championship since 1988. Oddly, the Broncos have never won a Skyline League title.
