February 18, 1996

Jessica Rondou took a pass from Gentry Green and scored from 20 yards four minutes into overtime, and Karen Hammonds followed with another goal three minutes later as Canyon High upset Quartz Hill, 3-1, Saturday in a first-round Southern Section Division III soccer playoff game at Quartz Hill.

Nicki Melillo gave Canyon a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute before Quartz Hill's Yvonne Ayala tied the score in the 72nd minute.

Canyon (8-11-4), which finished second in the Foothill League, advances to a second-round game Tuesday against Westridge. Quartz Hill (14-3-2) was the Golden League champion.

"We played [Quartz Hill] in the second game of the season and lost, 3-1," said Canyon Coach Michele Braceros, whose team was 2-9-1 earlier this season. "But we're so much better now and the girls didn't back down even though it was a very physical game."

Canyon advanced to the divisional semifinals last season after finishing third in league play and earning a wild-card berth.

Braceros is hoping for a similar run in the next two weeks.

"A lot of people will overlook us because we didn't have a strong preseason," she said. "Out of the 32 teams in the first round, we're the only team that didn't have at least 12 wins."

During field play, Ventura's Sera Haycox scored in the 20th minute, Drew scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute and Atturio scored in the 55th minute.

Ventura led, 3-1, midway through the second half but surrendered two goals in the final 15 minutes of regulation.

"They were trying to make me sweat again," said Ventura Coach Mike Ishihara, whose team used a shootout to edge Chaminade in a wild-card game Wednesday. "But we moved the ball all over the field and our defense played really well. They limited the shots."

Ventura advances to a second-round game Tuesday against Redlands.
