A Rainy Week Means Things May Get Ugly on Greens Today

February 22, 1996|THOMAS BONK

What is wet and round and full of holes?

It's probably going to be a green at Riviera Country Club today, where three days of rain followed by 144 players in spikes may turn the putting surfaces for the Nissan Open into something close to chopped salad.

Riviera officials, naturally, are hoping for the best for today's first round.

"Spiking up will be a problem," said Bill Bengeyfield, the club's greens guru. "We're thinking it might be better than some tournaments and maybe worse than others."

There is also the chance that possible rain today, on top of Wednesday night's, could wash out today's round.

Daily grounds passes are good any day. Ticket holders can get tournament information by calling (310) 573-5814.
