In other Orange Empire Conference baseball:

Cypress 8, Golden West 1--Greg Jacobs had four hits, one run and one run batted in as Cypress (13-4, 1-0) won its league opener. Craig Kuzmic had two hits for the Chargers.

Orange Coast 6, Riverside 5--Deric Yanagisaw's ninth-inning RBI single gave Orange Coast (13-0, 1-0) its 13th consecutive victory, first in conference. The Pirates trailed, 5-2, before the eighth inning, in which Orange Coast scored three runs, two on Chris Ponchak's second home run of the season.

After Riverside (10-3, 1-0) scored five runs in the first, reliever Bryan Moore held the Tigers scoreless for 7 2/3 innings.

In nonconference softball:

Fullerton 9, Santa Monica 1--Kristy Bonwell pitched a four-hitter for Fullerton (11-2). Kristy Osborne had two doubles and two walks for the Hornets.

In the South of the Border Men's swimming relays:

Golden West captures first--Scott Wester of Golden West captured the 50 freestyle (21.69) and Golden West captured three of the four relay events--the 400 medley (3:45.11), 200 freestyle (1:29.35) and the 400 freestyle (3:19.22)--to score 622 points. Palomar was second with 467.5 points.

In the South of the Border Women's swimming relays:

Saddleback wins--Lisa Henningsen of Saddleback captured the 50 freestyle (25.76) and the Saddleback relay teams captured the 200 medley (2:02.84), 200 freestyle (1:50.52) and the 400 freestyle (4:03.52) to score 573.5 points, Grossmont finished second with 498 points.
