February 27, 1996|From Associated Press

The New Jersey Devils, seeking help to beef up the second-worst offense in the NHL, acquired offensive-minded defenseman Phil Housley from the Calgary Flames in a five-player deal Monday night.

Housley, an all-star defenseman who had previously played in Buffalo, Winnipeg and St. Louis in his 14-year NHL career, came to New Jersey along with defenseman Dan Keczmer.

The Devils sent forward Jocelyn Lemieux and defensemen Tommy Albelin and Cale Hulse to the Flames.

"I felt we had to do something to improve our power play," Devil General Manager Lou Lamoriello said.

Owen Nolan scored his second goal of the night with 10:46 left to play to break a 4-4 tie and the San Jose Sharks went on to a 7-4 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at San Jose.
