VENTURA COUNTY NEWSWATCH

February 28, 1996|Lynne Barnes and Kenneth R. Weiss

WAR GAMES: Point Mugu supporters have forged a tentative alliance with rival boosters at China Lake (B1) that seems to be more promising than the local delegation's foray for Navy jobs. . . . On a recent trip to Washington, the locals asked the Navy's top admiral, J. Mike Boorda, to move an Aegis cruiser to the Port of Hueneme exclusively for testing weapons. His response came in a letter: "We simply lack a ship to be dedicated to such a mission."

GOOD DEEDS: The high school version of the Kiwanis Club is celebrating Kiwin week, during which club members do good deeds daily. The helpful acts by the 30 Kiwins at Camarillo High School include delivering cookies to police officers and working at a local food shelter. . . . At the site of the only other Kiwin Club in the county, the deeds are taking place on campus since club members are incarcerated. The two dozen members of the California Youth Authority chapter held an appreciation brunch for their teachers.

LOVE AND POLITICS: Actor Martin Sheen, who met congressional candidate Michael Jordan in a Malibu parking lot, liked what he learned about the Pepperdine professor. So Sheen will do a benefit performance of "Love Letters" tonight at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza to further Jordan's 24th District race. . . . Sheen, last seen in "The American President," is also known for his demonstrations--and arrests--in the name of peace and justice. He's not starting any big film projects soon: "I've got a ton of benefits that have overwhelmed my schedule for March."

JUST WAIT: So when will our on-again, off-again California heat be on again? Probably not until next Tuesday, but then it should be back into the 80s, meteorologist Rob Kaczmarek says. . . . This week, though, the rain and cold are expected to stick around (B2), along with snow in the higher elevations. Frazier Park got about 3 inches of the white stuff in 90 minutes Tuesday.
